The following historical data of the Dodge Ram, manufactured by Daimler Chrysler, was retrieved from many sources.

This is only a brief overview of certain important events in the history of the Dodge Ram Truck; before 1981 the Dodge Truck was actually called the 'D' Truck (also known as The Adventurer). We take you from 1981 to 2006.  

1981 Dodge Ram - First Edition

The first-generation Dodge Ram Trucks were designated as 150 (1/2 ton), 250 (3/4 ton), and 350 (1 ton); the designations did not change to 1500, 2500, and 3500 until 1994. The Dodge Ram engines were updated in 1989.

1994 Redesigned Dodge Ram Truck1994 brought about many changes to the design of the Dodge Ram truck including the, very popular, "semi-truck" look. Dodge also introduced it's 8.0L V10 engine that truck enthusiasts so loved.

The third-generation Dodge Ram made it's entree in 2002 and sported a larger grille, a new interior, a new frame, and an all new suspension. These new design changes also helped to popularize installing aftermarket Dodge Ram accessories. One interesting happening in 2003 was the entrance of the Dodge Ram SRT-10 which would capture the title of the fastest pickup on earth in 2004 with 500 horses. More Dodge Ram Info

2002: New third generation Dodge Ram debuted for the 1500 half ton truck. Major updates included an all new frame, suspension, powertrains, interior options, and sheet metal. The four wheel drive models dropped the solid front axle and went to independent front suspension. This is the first year for the new 5.7L Hemi engine that produces 100 more horsepower compared to the 5.9L of the last generation.

2003: New third generation Dodge Ram 2500/3500 debuted this year. The changes included new heavy duty frame, new engines including the 5.7L Hemi, interior options, and new body styling. The new body styling was influenced heavily by the previous generation. Unlike the 1500 half-ton the 2500/3500 kept the solid front axle for maximum longevity and durability.

2006: The Dodge Ram line-up was given a refresh with new headlights and tail lights. A new cab was introduced the Mega cab. The new cab featured 22" extra cab space, allowing seating for six with rear recliners. 5.7L Hemi V8 engine comes with new multi-displacement system, which increased fuel mileage by 3 MPG city and 4 MPG highway.

2007: New 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel introduced as an option in 2500/3500 models replacing the old outdated 5.9L diesels. The new 6.7L Cummins diesel was equipped with the new 6-speed transmission boosting horsepower by 25 and the torque by 40lb-ft.

2009: The fourth generation Ram was release this year with a new crew cab option that was larger than the quad cab models. It also features new suspension, a new hemi engine option, and the Rambox storage option that allows secure storage inside the truck's bed walls. The Rambox bed storage option is only available on the 5'7" bed.

2010: 2010 was a big year for the Dodge Ram because it was moved to its own division that was renamed Ram Truck. All truck models were brought over under this division, including the Dakota trucks. 2010 was also the same year that the new 2500/3500 models were available. They introduced new suspension, engine options, new body styling and interior options. The quad cab is no longer available on the 2500/3500 models. It was replaced with new crew cab option.

2012: The Rambox option was brought over to the 6'4" bed and for the first time available on all truck models. The electronic shift on the fly was made standard equipment on 4 wheel drive models and the manual shift on the fly was dropped, except for the Power Wagon models.

2013: The Ram line-up was given a face lift with new headlights and grille area. The new six speed automatic transmission is standard throughout the lineup. Manual shift on the fly returned for the 2013 models. Ram brings a new 8-speed Torqueflite8 Automatic is a new optional transmission that helps make the V6 Pentastar best in class fuel efficiency. The 5.7L Hemi no longer has a steering pump which gains 5 extra horsepower thanks to the new electronic power steering system.

2014: The 1500 half-ton is offered with a diesel option for the first time in nearly 20 years.
