The 2011 Mustang just gained more power

Everybody has sent the 2010 Mustang and all of its changes from the 09 models, but it’s a new year and change has come again albeit just really the engine. That’s right Ford have realized that they had to give this car more power to be competitive with the new Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

They have replaced the aging 4.0L V6 used in the Mustang since the 2005 model year, and in its place is the latest version of Ford’s Duratec 37 3.7L DOHC V6. Unlike earlier versions of this engine, the 2011 Mustang’s version features twin-independent variable cam timing. With this new technology and the engine’s true dual exhaust, the new V6 is rated to produce 305 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque.

Even though this new engine has produced massive gains in output, it is also capable of achieving fuel efficiency that surpasses the earlier Mustangs, thanks to its all-new transmission. The Getrag MT82 6-speed manual transmission co-developed with Ford, the 2011 Mustang has been certified by the EPA to achieve 19 mpg in city and 29 mpg on the highway. The newly optional Ford 6R60 6-speed automatic transmission, fuel efficiency is even better at an also-EPA certified 19 mpg in city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Now the 2011 Mustang GT has an all-new 5.0L DOHC V8 that replaces the 4.6L V8 that had new enhancements for the 2010 models. The new engine is all-aluminum that has been codenamed Coyote. This marks the engine’s first use in any production vehicle. The new 5.0L V8 can produce 412 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque.

Like the updated V6 Mustang, the GT also gets new transmissions for 2011. Both are heavier duty versions of the same designs offered with the V6 Mustang; a Getrag/Ford MT82 6-speed manual transmission and Ford’s 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission. Combined with its new, more efficient V8, the new 6-speed transmissions contribute to an improvement in fuel economy just like the base models. Certified by the EPA, the manual transmission models are able to achieve 17 mpg in city and 26 mpg on the highway, and the automatic transmission models are able to achieve 18 mpg in city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Now I know I said earlier that the engine was the only thing getting updated, but there have been some minor non-powertrain upgrades. The base and GT models include electric power assist steering, general aerodynamic improvements, a digital message/information center, blind spot mirrors integrated into the car’s side mirrors, a universal garage door opener, a 160 MPH speedometer, and Ford’s MyKey programmable vehicle key technology. There are a few features that are exclusive to the GT that include 5.0 fender badges replacing the “GT” badges used previously, an optional Brembo Brake Package taken from the Shelby GT500, and suspension enhancements.

So that pretty much breaks down the new features and enhancements for the new 2011 Ford Mustang. It should have no problem competing with the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger.
